Eight school districts fall within the borders of Douglas County.

The city of Lawrence is home to three National Blue Ribbon schools since the program’s inception and its schools routinely find themselves on the Kansas Standard of Excellence Honors list.  Nearby Eudora and Baldwin City school districts have also been recognized with Standard of Excellence honors by the state of Kansas.


Lawrence students consistently score above state and national averages on their ACT exams and high-schoolers enjoy a rich offering of extracurricular activities with championship legacies in debate, gymnastics, cross country, chess, and more.

The University of Kansas is an anchor of the region and known for the quality of its academic programs.  The university offers more than 190 undergraduate majors and nearly 50 of its graduate programs are nationally ranked.  KU is a major research university, conducting more research than all other Kansas universities combined.

Baker University and Haskell Indian Nations University also contribute to the wealth of higher education opportunities available in the area.
